Career prospects

The job description underlying traditional legal education, namely that of a universally employable (uniform) lawyer trained primarily to become a judge, is no longer appropriate to the requirements of modern business life.

Extremely time-consuming and costly studies compared to other European countries, a lack of efficiency in training, and a lack of economic and practical relevance in legal training are just some of the criticisms that can be leveled against the current system of legal training. In view of the ever-increasing demands that companies have to make of lawyers in international and European competition, a link to business and practice is indispensable. While the classical legal education lacks economic study contents, the pure study of economics lacks legal focal points. The University of Kassel therefore wants to make an important contribution to closing the gap between traditional legal training and purely economic training with the Bachelor's degree program "Business Law". With it, the university location Kassel, which is predestined for such a new course of studies with its profile oriented towards innovation, interdisciplinarity and internationality, has for the first time received an education that moves at the interface of law and economics. 

The basic idea of the Business Law degree program is to respond to the need of many companies for business lawyers by combining knowledge of economics with legal skills. The new degree program aims to train a business lawyer who avoids legal conflicts, the planning, shaping, negotiating and arbitrating lawyer with solid basic knowledge of economics. In terms of its methodological approach, the program thus emphasizes the interlinking of business and law-related content, the restriction to business-related legal subjects while dispensing with the "knowledge ballast" of certain areas of law (such as inheritance law, family law, etc.), the use of practice-oriented methods, and the teaching of certain additional qualifications (non-specialist key qualifications) that have not yet been taken into account either in traditional legal training or in traditional business training. In this way, graduates acquire a cross-sectional competence that has so far been lacking in practice.

The Business Law program is tailored to the needs of the business community. It does not see itself as a sub-form, but as an attractive alternative to traditional law and economics studies.

With the Bachelor's degree in "Business Law" you will receive a first professional qualification with a wide range of prospects. You are thus excellently qualified for a successful career start in the following areas:

• Legal or human resources departments of medium-sized and larger companies
• Law firms
• Management consulting
• Tax consultancy
• Trade associations
• Public sector institutions with an interdisciplinary character (e.g. economic development or environmental departments).

In addition, the successful completion of a bachelor's degree qualifies you for admission to a master's program, for example, in one of the diverse master's programs offered by the Department of Business and Economics.
