The bachelor's program in art history teaches you the diversity and breadth of art history. You will not only acquire basic competencies in dealing with the methods of art historical and art scientific work, but will also expand your knowledge through the practice-oriented focus of the program. In addition to a professional qualification, the B.A. degree also gives you access to a subsequent master's degree program.
First, through introductory and foundation modules, you will gain knowledge of the epochs and developmental history of art, methods for analyzing works, and the basics of scientific work. In the further course of the program, you can concentrate on an individually chosen thematic focus in terms of content, which is oriented towards the research fields represented in the program. These include painting from the 15th to the 19th century, central questions of art theory and aesthetics, the development of fine art in the 20th and 21st centuries, and modern art and museum history. The bachelor's degree in art studies is completed with a topic of your choice.
Seminars and lectures in the Art Studies program are usually held at the Kunsthochschule Kassel, which contributes to the personal atmosphere within the program and promotes individual student support. At the same time, you will benefit from the close proximity to artistic and design courses by visiting one of the total of 14 study workshops and taking courses there. Also part of your studies are excursions to national and international museums and related exercises in front of original works of art. In addition, exhibitions or publications are realized in interdisciplinary project seminars, which enables you to apply your acquired knowledge in practice.
The networking of the Art Studies program with the museums, galleries, and other art and cultural institutions located in Kassel and the surrounding area also contributes to this, where you can gain your first professional experience in the context of an internship and get an overview of the many different paths that are open to art scholars after their studies.
With its high density of museums, which includes not only the institutions of the Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel but also the Fridericianum as an exhibition venue for contemporary art, Kassel also offers prospective art scholars optimal conditions for a lively exploration of the diversity of art with the documenta, which takes place every five years.
