Career prospects

With a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, graduates open up diverse career prospects. They are thus excellently qualified for a successful career start in the following areas, among others:

• Clinical institutions, health care facilities
• Counseling centers or independent counseling
• Research & Teaching in the field of psychotherapy research

In September of last year, the new licensing regulations for psychotherapists were passed. According to these regulations, psychotherapeutic training can only be commenced with a corresponding course of study approved by the State Examination Office with a licensing examination. This applies to all students who have started their Bachelor of Psychology since winter semester 20/21. If you started your bachelor's degree before or have already completed it, you still have until 2032 to complete your psychotherapeutic training according to the "old" system (bachelor's degree + master's degree + training with licensure at the end of the training).

Your professional title after licensure is psychotherapist. After passing the licensing examination, you can obtain recognition under social law through further training in a psychotherapy procedure. This is a prerequisite, for example, in order to be able to work fully as a psychotherapist (with a registered office). In the further training you specialize either in the treatment of children and adolescents, adults or in neuropsychology and in at least one psychotherapy method, i.e. behavior therapy, depth psychology-based psychotherapy, analytical psychotherapy or systemic therapy. Subsequently, you are called, for example, "Fachpsychotherapeut*in für Kinder und Jugendliche (Verhaltenstherapie)". 

Please note: If you are striving to enter psychological psychotherapy training after graduating from the M.Sc. Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, since a court ruling, your options depend on the state examination office where you want to do your psychotherapy training (psychological psychotherapist or child and adolescent psychotherapist).

Please inquire individually at the responsible state examination office in a preliminary inquiry which training you can do (list of state examination offices). The responsible state is the one in which you would like to start your training as a psychological psychotherapist. In the preliminary inquiry, state both your Bachelor's degree and your future Master's degree. Please have the information provided in writing and keep it until the licensing examination.
