Development and management of research projects (EMF)

Participation is open to doctoral candidates and postdocs, as well as young artists who plan to submit an application for third-party funding in the near future. The programme is primarily open to members and affiliates of the University of Kassel and (associated) members of the Marburg University Research Academy (MARA). If spaces are available, external persons such as doctoral candidates and postdocs from other universities can participate at an increased registration fee.

Parallel to the electronic registration for the programme, interested parties should submit a brief letter of motivation by email to the responsible coordination office in Kassel (emf@uni-kassel.de) or Marburg(mara.postdoc[at]uni-marburg[dot]de). In this informal letter (max. 2,000 characters), please explain why you would like to participate in the EMF programme, what your career goals are and the extent to which third-party funding applications and projects contribute to your research profile and the further development of your academic career.

The "Development and Management of Research Projects" (EMF) programme imparts competencies for the acquisition and implementation of third-party funded projects in the area of application, financing, management, leadership and transfer. It provides a basis of learning and training for expanding key qualifications. The programme consists of a two-year workshop phase of research-relevant key qualifications and an additional year for writing a third-party funding proposal and defending it before the programme's academic advisory board. The EMF is aimed at postdocs and advanced doctoral candidates from all faculties of the Philipps University of Marburg, as well as the University of Kassel.

As a participant in the programme, you have the following advantages:

  • You will prepare a third-party funding application on a "trial basis" and receive qualified feedback by the academic advisory board.
  • Through the cooperation between the University of Kassel and the Philipps University of Marburg, you can attend the offers at both universities. Compulsory courses are offered in both Kassel and Marburg, which means that there are always two respective dates from which to choose. The range of elective courses varies between the two universities, which further increases the variety of courses.
  • The selection of the elective courses is flexible.
  • The course units are coordinated with each other.
  • Participants can network with each other.
  • The course units are specially tailored to the requirements of applying for and handling third-party funding.

The EMF programme is divided into five modules:

  • Introduction and reviewer session
  • Project development and project application
  • Project management
  • Presentation of research projects
  • Transfer

In order to obtain a certificate, a total of 200 working hours/working units (WU) must be completed. They are composed as follows:

  • Five compulsory workshops (CW) (including the Introduction to the EMF Programme), as well as an elective workshop (EW) from the module transfer as compulsory courses. These six workshops earn at least 66 WUs.
  • In addition, there are further elective workshops to be completed until a total of 120 WUs are fulfilled.
  • Writing a third-party funding application (80 WU)
  • Submission and presentation of the third-party funding application at a reviewer session with successful evaluation (4 WU).

You can find details in the  regulations of the EMF programme, as well as the Rrules for the assessment of third-party funding applications at the conclusion of the EMF programme and for the procedure of the reviewer session.

"Research projects are a main component of any academic work. If you want to pursue them systematically, you will need knowledge about funding possibilities and the ability to transform innovative ideas into structured, strategically oriented projects. As a graduate of the EMF programme, I have benefited significantly from the competencies that I acquired in my later work – and it certainly hasn't hurt my job applications either".

Prof. Dr. Gerrit Hornung, Former EMF participant
