Annual report 2022/2023 published

The reporting years 2022 and 2023 were marked by two foreign policy crises with a direct impact on the University of Kassel: the start of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and the terrorist attack on Israel by the radical Palestinian group Hamas on October 7, 2023, which led to the Gaza War. At the University of Kassel, as at many other universities in Germany, discussions were sometimes heated. The university management appealed for standards of democratic debate and non-violence to be upheld in order to ensure peaceful coexistence on campus.

The report focuses on information about developments in areas such as research, studies and teaching, knowledge transfer, internationalization, construction, culture, equality and staff development. The importance of the university in their lives is highlighted in seven portraits of professors, students and employees.

The report also contains key figures, for example on students and the budget. For example, the university received around 73.5 million euros in third-party funding in 2022. In 2021, third-party funding still amounted to 64 million euros, an increase of 15 percent. The nationwide trend of declining student numbers, which was already evident during the pandemic, also continued in Kassel: In the winter semester 2023/2024, 21,898 students were enrolled at the university (winter semester 2022/23: 23,006). Irrespective of this development, the University of Kassel expanded its range of courses with new degree programs in the reporting period. These include the Bachelor's degree course in International Language and Cultural Mediation and the new Master's degrees in Agriculture, Ecology & Societies and Music Publishing.
