Viktoria Horn is a research assistant at the University of Kassel and a graduate of the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg in Human-Computer Interaction (MSc). Until April 2024, she was part of the FAIRDIENSTE project, which investigated how fair digital services and their business models can be designed with regard to data protection, fair value mediation and their socio-technical embedding.

Her current research interests and focus as part of her doctorate are on researching preconditions and methods for the participatory and value-oriented design of data-driven services.

She also supervises project work and theses in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in computer science.

@article{Horn_2024, abstract = {In the data economy digital services of democratic value such as news platforms are embedded into unjust power imbalances and the intertwining of economic and civic objectives. The authors argue, to design proficient democratic digital services, power structures of the data economy and empowerment stages of data citizenship need to be made visible initially. To do so, a combination of Arnstein’s ‘Ladder of Citizen Participation’ and Rocha’s ‘Ladder of Empowerment’ is translated into the field of the data economy. A small interview study with niche actors from the field of online journalism is conducted to identify phenomena of their embedding into the sociotechnical landscape of the data economy. As a result, the Ladder of Data Citizen Participation is presented. With our work, we contribute towards a qualitative analysis of the discourse on controversies in online news media. For this, we employ Formal Concept Analysis and the economics of conventions to derive conceptual controversy maps. In our experiments, we analyze two maps from different news journals with methods from ordinal data science. We show how these methods can be used to assess the diversity, complexity and potential bias of controversies. In addition to that, we discuss how the diagrams of concept lattices can be used to navigate between news articles.

Today, exposure to journalistic online content is predominantly controlled by news recommender systems, which often suggest content that matches user’s interests or is selected according to non-transparent recommendation criteria. To circumvent resulting trade-offs like polarisation or fragmentation whilst ensuring user’s autonomy, we explore how different perspectives within online news can be disclosed instead for guiding navigation. To do so, we developed an interactive prototype that displays article titles in correspondence to their argumentative orientation. In order to investigate how the usage of our novel navigation structure impacts the choice of news articles and user experience, we conducted an exploratory user study assessing the impact of the design parameters chosen. Implications are drawn from the study results and the development of the interactive prototype for the exposure to diversity in the context of navigating news content online.

Ausgehend von der Beobachtung, dass gegenwärtige Herausforderungen der Datenökonomie neben der angemessenen Verwendung von Daten auch Aspekte der gerechten Verteilung von Erlösen, die Manipulation durch Algorithmen oder die Beeinflussung der politischen Meinungsbildung durch Plattformen betreffen, lotet das vorliegende White Paper Möglichkeiten der fairen Gestaltung datenökonomischer Geschäftsmodelle aus. Die erarbeiteten Instrumente und Analysen zur Unterstützung einer fairen Geschäftsmodellgestaltung basieren auf Ergebnissen des vom BMBF geförderten Projekts „Faire digitale Dienste: Ko-Valuation in der Gestaltung datenökonomischer Geschäftsmodelle (FAIRDIENSTE)“. Um ein analytisch gehaltvolles Fairness-Verständnis zu entwickeln, das auch für die konkrete datenökonomische Gestaltungspraxis innovative und wirtschaftlich tragfähige Alternativen zu gegenwärtigen Geschäftsmodellen freizulegen vermag, wurden in FAIRDIENSTE verschiedene Ansätze der kooperativen Wertvermittlung (im Folgenden auch „Ko-Valuation“) erprobt, die wir als Verrechnung, Design und Kultivierung bezeichnen: Erstens wurde untersucht, inwiefern sich unterschiedliche Werte in eine ökonomische Sprache der Preise übersetzen und fair verrechnen lassen (Verrechnung). Um ein analytisch gehaltvolles Fairness-Verständnis zu entwickeln, das auch für die konkrete datenökonomische Gestaltungspraxis innovative und wirtschaftlich tragfähige Alternativen zu gegenwärtigen Geschäftsmodellen freizulegen vermag, wurden in FAIRDIENSTE verschiedene Ansätze der kooperativen Wertvermittlung (im Folgenden auch „Ko-Valuation“) erprobt, die wir als Verrechnung, Design und Kultivierung bezeichnen: Erstens wurde untersucht, inwiefern sich unterschiedliche Werte in eine ökonomische Sprache der Preise übersetzen und fair verrechnen lassen (Verrechnung). Zweitens wurde herausgearbeitet, wie Wertkonflikte durch technische und regulative Designs kanalisiert werden können (Design). Current approaches to the design and development of digital business models (DBMs) overlook the multiple, and sometimes conflicting, logics of actors with which the focal firm seeks to co-create value. The lack of integrating stakeholders’ logics into DBMs has potentially detrimental and unintended ethical and social consequences. By collaboratively conducting an action research project with a digital publisher and drawing on participatory and value-sensitive design principles, we develop a novel approach for designing DBMs that integrates actors’ multiple logics by design. We contribute to literature by introducing a new approach highlighting DBMs’ inherent social aspects and furthering our understanding of multiple logics’ role in DBMs. Practitioners gain a concrete DBM design method preempting conflict.

Participation in the data economy is prone to unjust power imbalances. Individuals function as mere data sources and are left out of decisions on how, when, and where personal data is accumulated and processed. In this paper, we translate Arnsteins' `Ladder of Citizen Participation' to the field of the data economy to offer a conceptual lens to tackle power imbalances' underlying structures. For this, we derived assumptions from the application's ecosystem. We propose to encase the lowest rungs of the ladder with the term of involuntary participation and frame individuals as digital Citizens to avoid a mere focus on the economic dimension of participation. Building on this, we translate the eight rungs of Arnstein's original ladder to the new application field of the data economy through examples and design affordances corresponding with differing degrees of digital citizens' data agency. Eventually, we contemplate implications for socio-technical design resulting from the re-conceptualization of the `ladder' and formulate future research.

Lattices and their order diagrams are an essential tool for communicating knowledge and insights about data. This is in particular true when applying Formal Concept Analysis. Such representations, however, are difficult to comprehend by untrained users and in general in cases where lattices are large. We tackle this problem by automatically generating textual explanations for lattices using standard scales. Our method is based on the general notion of ordinal motifs in lattices for the special case of standard scales. We show the computational complexity of identifying a small number of standard scales that cover most of the lattice structure. For these, we provide textual explanation templates, which can be applied to any occurrence of a scale in any data domain. These templates are derived using principles from human-computer interaction and allow for a comprehensive textual explanation of lattices. We demonstrate our approach on the spices planner data set, which is a medium sized formal context comprised of fifty-six meals (objects) and thirty-seven spices (attributes). The resulting 531 formal concepts can be covered by means of about 100 standard scales.

In particular, the analysis of these requires a decomposition of a large and high-dimensional lattice into a set of understandably large parts. With the present work we propose /ordinal motifs/ as analytical units of meaning. We study these ordinal substructures (or standard scales) through (full) scale-measures of formal contexts from the field of formal concept analysis. We show that the underlying decision problems are NP-complete and provide results on how one can incrementally identify ordinal motifs to save computational effort. Accompanying our theoretical results, we demonstrate how ordinal motifs can be leveraged to retrieve basic meaning from a medium sized ordinal data set.
